President's Message, December 2009

What is ART? Where can we find it in Watertown, NY? Here are some things that I have found lately....

Abstract Expressionism. On December 1, 2009 the Jefferson County Historical Society presented a lecture/discussion
on Abstract Expressionism.  Patricia Guldenpfenning, retired Art Educator, framed the ideas of Mark Rothko and
Jackson Pollock in the context of the ideas that came before and after.  Abstract Expressionism often brings a "my
kid could paint that" response.  Patricia helped the audience to understand the thinking behind this style of work.

specialist from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, now on our Museum's staff. Learn more at:

ETA 3. If you went to the Trinity Concert Series on November  7, you know that this means a brilliant nebula of
beautiful music. The Julliard trained trio travels the world performing their original compositions for piano, flute and
clarinet. That we could see and hear them up close is an unbelievable opportunity.  My 16 year old daughter, Kayla,
and her friend Morgan loved this group. Thank you to Kyle Ramey and all of the people who are making this
wonderful series happen for our community. Learn more at:

Into the Woods.  Lyric Theater, a long held musical and theatrical tradition in the North Country, presented an
entertaining fall musical complete with well known local actors and singers, and a smattering of talented newcomers.
It's always fun to see what this group is up to. Learn more at: www.watertownlyrictheater.org

FourthCoast Entertainment. This publication is a great directory for "All Things Arts Related". There are listing for
classes, bands, calendar of events for the North Country and beyond. Learn more at:

Art Squared. View and purchase works by local artists, including "6x6" creations whose sales benefit the Children's
Clinic, in shop windows around Public Square. This is a partnership between the North Country Arts Council, the
Downtown Business Association and the Children's Clinic.  Learn more about the North Country Arts Council and
some surprising arts offerings in our area at:  www.nnyart.org

My book club. While I don't quite have the pull that Oprah has, I lucked out and found a great group of new friends
to enjoy books with. We just read Skin Deep by E.M. Crane. This book, and it's author, are interesting reads. I know
this because E.M Crane, full time author and resident of Sackets Harbor, was our book club guest! Learn more about
this author and her work at: www.emcrane.com

As we move into 2010, here's hoping that you will find new ways to connect to The Arts! If the Arts Council can help
to make that happen, we are happy to be of service. Join the Council and add your ideas for growth to the mix.
